Leucanthemum 'Freak!' to be launched at Chelsea
New introduction Leucanthemum ‘Freak!’ will be displayed for the first time at the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show as part of the exhibit by Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants.
A real garden showstopper, 'Freak!' produces large amounts of fluffy-looking flowers formed from layers of white petals, some of which randomly fall in different directions to give a wild, artistic look which breaks from the more typically straight-laced Leucanthemum structure.
The 5 to 6 cm flowers are evenly distributed all over compact, well-branched plants and bloom for a long period. Vibrant dark-green foliage provides a clean, well-contrasting backdrop.
Plants reach just 23 cm the first year in containers, eventually attaining a mature garden height of 33 cm, making them perfect for growing in containers or featuring in the front of the border.
Easily programmable for long sales period
For growers and retailers, one of ‘Freak!’s greatest assets is its easy programmability for fresh flowering plants over a long sales period. Vernalisation is not necessary for flowering and shelf-ready plants can be produced in about 11 weeks. Plants are naturally well-branched with strong stems, so no pinching is required.
Leucanthemum ‘Freak!’ was bred by Har Stemkens of Syngenta Flowers, a Dutchman with over 30 years plant breeding experience who prides himself on his chaotic creative approach which has resulted in many noteable successes across a number of genera.
‘Freak!’ was selected to be a Blooms of Bressingham variety for its reliably exceptional ‘flower power’, producing so many long-lasting flowers over a long blooming season neatly distributed over the entire plant.
Plants are now available to order from Walter Blom Plants as 4 cm plugs in trays of 84.
